Nine years ago, my wife and I were in the hospital expecting our first child. We were both filled with a range of emotions (my wife more so since she was actually doing the whole childbirth thing). It was determined that she was going to have a Cesarean section. I was amazed with the number of medical professionals in the room with us as the surgery took place. I saw my wife's doctor inhale some Oreo cookies before scrubbing in for the procedure! Each person seemed to have a specific role in the process. My wife and I had agreed that I would follow our newborn after delivery since she would need to stay behind, and I did just that.
Later the three of us would be reunited and I had the pleasure of changing the first diaper as my wife was still recovering from the surgery. I am thankful that she was there to talk me through the process because I was nervous (I would later become a professional; changing thousands of diapers).
While in our hospital room, my wife received a phone call from the business office. They were asking about payment for the hospital visit. I am a protective husband, mathematician, and a good negotiator. I told the person on the phone that I did not appreciate the phone call (my wife was still recovering) and that I would find them (think of Liam Neeson from the movie Taken). I later navigated the hospital maze and patiently waited for magnetized security doors to open to find the business office. I expressed my dissatisfaction and negotiated 20% off the entire hospital visit!
I am thankful for all the family and friends that came to visit us at the hospital and in our home. The time spent, advice offered, and meals were extremely helpful. However, reality sets in very quickly!
Being a new parent is no easy task. My awesome wife was determined to breastfeed (and she did!) and we were also adapting to baby time (you're awake when the baby is awake). I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE (I didn't die)! How could a human possibly function with so little sleep? Once, I was so drowsy, I woke myself up because I was patting my own chest and shushing myself. My wife and I teamed up and made it happen.
We're still making it happen!
Happy Father's Day!

It's amazing the lack of sleep you can run on when you become a parent!
